About Gear
The significance of equipment, or “gear”, in 7th Extinction is immense. Far more than a mere assembly of objects, it acts as an essential component of each character's survival kit, necessary to combat threats and solve complex problems. Whether it's a high-energy plasma weapon, a stealth cloaking device, or a rusty piece of alien technology, equipment aids characters in traversing the dangers of post-invasion Earth and beyond.
Equipment can be used to create a unique character identity. The type of equipment a player chooses can say a lot about their character's personality, skills, and aspirations. A jetpack user, for instance, might be seen as more adventurous and daring compared to a character who uses a hoverboard.
Acquiring Equipment
Players can acquire equipment in a variety of ways, including the following…..
Buying, Trading & Selling
Equipment can be obtained from merchants, discovered in shops, or looted from fallen foes. In the vast subterranean cities of The Settlement & Deep Harbour, most equipment transactions involve script—a testimony to the enduring presence of capitalism. However, in the Outlands, script often holds little value; trading is the prevailing means of acquisition.
Salvaging
A lot of equipment has a salvage value listed. Yes that's right, player characters can salvage equipment to harvest materials (Mats), which can then be used to upgrade or even craft new gear.
Upgrading
Equipment can often be upgraded to improve its stats or abilities. This can be done by obtaining upgrades, finding them, or crafting them from Mats.
Crafting
Equipment can be crafted by characters using Mats they have salvaged, found or purchased. However, to do so, they must have the appropriate tools, facilities and skills.
Equipment can be used in a variety of ways, depending on its type. For example, weapons can be used to attack enemies, armour can be used to shield characters from damage, and tools can be used to solve puzzles, upgrade and craft gear.
Additionally, equipment can interact with the environment in various ways. A jetpack might enable flight, a grappling hook could assist in climbing walls, and a scanner could unveil hidden objects.
Technology Levels
Equipment is classified into four distinct technology levels, each indicative of sophistication. Communities, cities and merchants will all have a listed tech level, this helps identify quickly what equipment will be available for purchase and/or trade by the gamemaster.
[P] Primitive
Primitive equipment pertains to simple and rudimentary tools requiring minimal technical knowledge (pre-gunpowder). This includes weapons like bows and arrows, hand tools, and basic survival gear. Primitive tools, while simple, are often reliable and easy to repair due to their lack of complex parts.
[L] Low Tech
Low tech equipment represents the pinnacle of pre-invasion human technological development, featuring advanced electronics, complex machinery, and sophisticated software. Examples include ballistic firearms, computers, and advanced medical equipment.
[H] High Tech
High tech equipment represents advanced electronics, intricate machinery, and innovative elements like energy weapons, nanobots, and neoware. Additionally, transportation gadgets such as jet packs and anti-gravity vehicles are also considered part of this category due to their technological complexity.
[E] Experimental
Experimental technology includes revolutionary advancements not yet mass-produced or widely understood, often with unpredictable or volatile characteristics.
When an item is salvaged, characters receive a number of materials (Mats) corresponding to the item's tech level. So, for instance, salvaging a High Tech device would yield High Tech Mats. These mats can then be used in crafting or upgrading other items of the same tech level. The number of Mats received usually depends on the complexity and condition of the salvaged item, to simplify it, a salvage value has been listed for each item.
Game Masters: feel free to adjust the Mats yielded based on conditions such as after Conflict may damage items, maybe items weren't kept in the best condition by the NPC's
Restricted Items
While not a technology level, some equipment will have an “R” listed next to the technology level. This refers to high-grade tech, either advanced human or alien in origin, typically confined to military, city-state or otherwise privileged groups. This could encompass powerful weapons, state-of-the-art surveillance systems, and advanced propulsion devices. Restricted items often come with legal, ethical, or safety concerns attached.
